Boxing Betting: Why You Should Bet on Floyd Mayweather Against Conor McGregor

By Loot, Boxing Handicapper, Lootmeister.com

Naturally, when a fighter is favored as much as Floyd Mayweather is heading into his blockbuster boxing match with Conor McGregor, people don't need to be convinced to bet. But for those willing to bet on Mayweather at big favorite odds, there are some good reasons to do it even if the possible returns on your money aren't that great. In this article, we break down the main reasons why betting on Floyd Mayweather is a good idea.

Chances of Victory: A lot of people believe that this is a slam-dunk for Floyd Mayweather. While it's a somewhat-simplistic perspective, it's not entirely without merit. At the end of the day, there is something inherently-unfathomable about an MMA champ in his first boxing match being able to beat a 49-0 legend who had very few moments in the ring where his opponent was so much as even competitive. While skimming the surface and betting based on principle can be a flawed method, there is something to be said for the fact that a scenario where McGregor wins is just hard to imagine on a lot of levels.

Betting Value: We see Floyd getting as low as -500 or -600 odds at some shops. Normally, the odds on Mayweather aren't all that appetizing. A fighter with considerable hype around him, he's usually a bigger favorite than what the actual probability of defeat suggests. At the odds he's receiving here, McGregor is being given a somewhat robust 12-15% chance at victory. A lot of people think that number should be closer to 5%. Some think less, but they're probably not giving Conor enough credit for his overall fighting spirit and powerful left hand punch. In any event, Mayweather isn't as big a favorite as some think he should be and that equals pretty good value for betting on Mayweather—something that hasn't always been the case.

The Experience Factor: On one hand, you have a boxer in Mayweather who has been through it all. He came from a family of prominent boxers and had a decorated amateur career that culminated in a medal in the Olympics. Then you have a pro career that spans over two decades where he beat a plethora of different champions from a number of different weight classes. On the other hand of the equation, you have McGregor. He did some boxing growing up and probably can handle himself in a ring. But his experience lags so far behind Mayweather's that you need a telescope to spot it. Experience perhaps isn't always a reliable indicator, but can you remember a fight where there was such a disparity in experience? A debuting fighter against the most-educated boxer of this generation creates a dichotomy so wide that it makes the Grand Canyon look like a sidewalk-crack.

The Ability Factor: When you have two fighters with this much notoriety, you're dealing with a lot of ability on both sides. But this is boxing. And in changing sports, McGregor relinquishes some of his talents, leaving them behind as he comes into a boxing ring. Granted, a lot of his success was built on punching, which he can naturally carry in with him into the squared circle. But socking up MMA fighters and landing on a defensive whiz like Mayweather are two completely different things. Money May has seen his techniques work against the best boxers the sport has to offer. Meanwhile, with McGregor, we can only speculate. Those who know the sport of boxing also know there are many other assets that can only be earned through massive exposure to the sport. Those fine points may be harder to see than things like hand-speed or punching power, but in a fight where the gulf in overall ability is this wide, there is a good chance we will see those abilities manifest in the ring.

Floyd's Hidden Talents: Again, it's not all about speed and power or any of the more-obvious talents a boxer may possess. When you're dealing with Mayweather, there are more off-the-grid abilities that need to be considered. There's a level of nuance that is only evident to the discerning eye. For example, Floyd knows how to take a punch, both from a durability standpoint and just how a boxer like Floyd can take the steam off his opponents' shots by rolling and turning. There are dozens of other smaller things boxers like Mayweather do that a debuting boxer can't possibly do.

It's like a blind man who can hear really well. When all you have is your hands, then that part of your game gets developed to a higher degree. Floyd hasn't had to worry about kicks, ground game, takedown defense, and the like. The entire focus has been hands, how to throw them and how to take it. And as a result, he's picked up tricks and abilities that Conor hasn't needed to develop. What they call "boxing" in MMA is checkers compared the advanced chess class Floyd teaches when in the boxing ring.

The flash might blind people from some hard facts about Floyd. There is a certain ruggedness and toughness he doesn't get credit for to a full extent. Against a tough lineup of talent in the other corner, he had the wherewithal to get through an endless string of 12-rounders victoriously. That's a lot of rounds where he was exposed to different weapons and he emerged almost unscathed. While we spend a lot of time breaking down the fighters' individual strengths and weaknesses, one commonly-overlooked ability is the capacity a fighter has to simply win. And in that area, it's hard to top Mayweather. Did you know... that you could be wagering on fights at discounted odds?
