College Football Betting: Bad Reasons to Not Bet on College Football

By Loot, NCAA Football Handicapper, Lootmeister.com

A lot of people want to bet college football, but have some reservations about getting into the mix. And to their defense, the world of college football wagering can be a little daunting. Some might be hesitant to gamble, which is something that has a bad reputation in many circles. Then there's the numbers game, which to some, might feel like they are having to learn a new language. There's also sometimes a lack of trust for those in the college football betting industry. Add it all up and you have a lot of people that are interested in it, but just can't seem to get around to actually doing it.

For those who are having trouble getting started or perceive it as being too problematic--here are some thoughts that might alleviate your concerns. In the interest of showing equanimity, there are sometimes good reasons for not playing. Maybe you're financially strapped, have a family to support, and have no disposable income to speak of. Maybe you come from a long line of problem gamblers on your family tree and want to break the mold. Whatever the case may be, there might be good reasons why you haven't jumped into the waters of college football betting. By all means, don't force it.

Some people, however, refrain from betting on college football for silly reasons. Deep down, they have always thought about betting on college football or maybe even shown an aptitude for it along the way. They win office pools regularly or have exhibited a knack for succeeding in fantasy play. But there are mental hurdles to overcome.

A beginning bettor might look at the odds and think he's reading Chinese. Kind of like how a guy who never played stocks will look at the financial section of a newspaper and be utterly lost. This is a major misconception on the part of many--that the numbers game that rules sports-betting takes a math whiz to understand. Go to a sportsbook next time you're in Vegas and take a look around at the people. You're right. If these people can learn the math that governs college football wagering, then so can you.

It's not terribly difficult. We have many articles here at Lootmeister.com that explain it to a tee. Even if you never laid a college football wager in your life, you're probably not more than 30 minutes away from understanding what it's all about. It's really easy and while it might take more time for the numbers to become second-nature to you, you are literally just minutes away from understanding it well enough to begin making bets.

If you are hesitant to gamble, that's actually an asset in some ways when it comes to college football betting. You might have a built-in sense of conservatism that will greatly aid you on your journey as a bettor. One of the main reasons a lot of bettors fail is because they have too much gambling spirit. Not really liking gambling in your bones will allow you to only bet on the best propositions. In addition, your ability to lose a bet without becoming unhinged to the point where you start chasing will be diminished if deep down, you really don't have the heart of a gambler.

There are many reasons why a prospective college football bettor doesn't get started that lies in the areas of trust and consumer confidence. That's understandable. It probably doesn't help that every time you've ever seen a bookie portrayed in a movie, it was some sleazy guy or even a mobbed-up degenerate. But these aren't the days of old. Sure, there are some unsavory sorts who gravitate to the world of gambling and therefore, college football wagering. But by in large, it's not hard to find reputable people to deal with. And keep in mind, in today's electronic age, if there is a sportsbook that is up to monkey business--it certainly won't be a secret for very long.

There are a lot of guys who can't bring themselves to start betting, even though they might have what it takes. In a weird way, your trepidation is a good sign in a form of gambling that values traits like thoughtfulness, caution, and not gambling just for the sake of it. It would just be discomforting for anyone to think they are good at something without actually giving it a try. The bottom line is that if you think you have what it takes, you should at least dip your big toe into the pool.
