Betting on Super Bowl LI: MVP Winner

Betting On Super Bowl LI: MVP Winner

By Loot, NFL Handicapper, Lootmeister.com

Betting on who will win the Super Bowl MVP is one of the more appealing and popular prop bets for the biggest football game of the season. What we generally like to do is spray the board with some different choices. Before we do, we need to think it through some. Who and what kind of performance typically wins a Super Bowl MVP? Should we focus on favorites, underdogs, or both? How off the grid do we want to go when making selections?

It's hard to not notice the preponderance of quarterbacks that win this award. In 50 Super Bowls, 27 quarterbacks have won the Super Bowl MVP. Accordingly, Tom Brady and Matt Ryan are the two top choices on the board. What makes it a bit more difficult in games like this is that it's a competitive game, with New England favored by only three points. While you can shade it more to the team you prefer, both squads need to be accounted for in this wager. While you always have to think QB, there have been enough winners who weren't quarterbacks to make it so we have to look beyond. Again, offense is a big part of the equation, but we also notice defensive players have won this award twice in the last three years, with LB Malcolm Smith winning it when Seattle won the Bowl and Von Miller taking it last season for the Broncos.

In the case of Smith a few years ago and others throughout Super Bowl history, it sometimes pays handsomely to look to the long-shots. It delivers often enough to make it so we can take a whirl on some different guys at the bottom of the chart. And with this bet, if the right guy delivers, it will pay enough to cover all your other bets and still pay a profit. Let's look at the odds to win the Super Bowl LI MVP, followed by some picks, categorized by favorites, mid-range shots, and some longshots, as well. Take a look!

Super Bowl MVP Favorites: With these two teams, wins usually come with impressive work from the quarterback. Whichever team wins, there's a pretty good chance one of them will win. Then again, betting on both Brady and Ryan won't leave room to make any money. Here's who else we like:

Julio Jones (+750): He has certainly shown he can put up huge numbers. Granted, the Pats will be honing in on him, but he's so good that he can still take over a game even at this level. And at +750, that's not bad value for a guy who might be the best at his position on the field.

Mid-Range Picks:

Julian Edelman (+1600): Brady's favorite target might wreak havoc on this Atlanta secondary, where he appears to match up very well. Also used as a return man, Edelman will have multiple ways to make an MVP imprint on this game.

LeGarrette Blount (+2000): Scoring touchdowns can also get it done and no back had more than Blount this season. Look for him to be showing some lively legs in this one.

Tevin Coleman (+3300): Getting a burner who gets a lot of touches like Coleman could really pay off if the stars align properly. You don't want to get too crazy betting on either team's aerial weapons, being that it is also indicative of a QB having a great game, which would usually get the MVP. But Coleman's combination of prowess on the ground and through the air makes him interesting at 33-to-1.

Super Bowl MVP Long-Shots:

Mohamed Sanu (+4000): With Jones getting so much attention, Sanu could get a lot of looks and if anything, he's shown he is capable as a go-to receiver. Granted, this is a different stage at a higher level, but Sanu has been very impressive in spots and offers pretty good value at +4000.

Logan Ryan (+5000): Ryan has really rounded into shape this season, boosting the New England secondary to the status it now enjoys. If a defensive player were to blow up for the Pats and have a big game, it could be the peaking Ryan.

Malcom Butler (+6600): The New England corner will have a chance to make some plays working against Jones. Not a likely choice, but again, he's 66-to-1 and if looking for potential defensive stars of the game, he stands out as a legitimate candidate.

Levine Toilolo (+15000): Well, he's 150-to-1 for a reason. He likely won't get the targets he needs to make a substantial dent in this game. Still, at these odds, he could be a somewhat interesting X-factor. Did you know... that you could be wagering on who will win the the Super Bowl MVP?
