The Kansas City Chiefs come into East Rutherford to take on the New York Jets on Sunday in week 13 AFC action. The Chiefs are really hurting and after a 5-0 start, they are now 6-5, having dropped three in a row and 5 of 6, including a 16-10 loss to a struggling Bills team at home last Sunday. If a team ever needed a good development, it would be the Chiefs this week. The Jets gave it a good go at home against the Panthers on Sunday, but mistakes late led to them losing, 35-27. They are 4-7 and hope for a more-complete performance this week in their second straight game at home.

The Jets were hanging in there the whole game against the now 8-3 Panthers. In the 4th quarter, a fumble returned for a TD and punt-return for a touchdown quickly took the wind out of the Jets' sails. They tried to come back and a touchdown made it close, but they ran out of time. Despite a 4-7 mark with a poor ATS mark, the Jets have actually been pretty respectable and since week two, all their games have either been wins or one-score losses. In other words, opposing teams and bettors alike can't take the Jets for granted this season. Still, after a promising 3-2 start, 5 losses in their last 6 games has been a letdown. But the Chiefs showed last week that even beating struggling AFC East teams is a struggle. The Jets hope for more of that this week.

All told, Jets quarterback Josh McCown has been an asset. On Sunday, he threw three TD passes on 307 yards passing. Robbie Anderson and Jermaine Kearse both had big games. Anderson had 146 yards and two touchdowns, while Kearse added 105 yards and a TD. On the ground, they were subdued, but Bilal Powell and McCown added some useful runs, with Matt Forte quiet on the day. McCown, however, did fumble the ball away, which was returned for a key score, while the punt-team also collapsed and led to another score.

The defense really wasn't that bad for the Jets on Sunday. Of the Panthers' 35 points, fourteen of them were not on offense. Cam Newton was held to 11-for-28 passing with just 168 yards. They weren't as good against the Carolina run, which has been a recurring issue this season. Darron Lee, Steve McLendon, and Demario Davis all sacked Newton on the day, with LB Josh Martin big on the day. They were better than what the final score indicated and performed well enough to get the win on Sunday, if not betrayed by turnovers and mistakes that did not occur on this side of the ball.

The Chiefs have tumbled from grace in bewildering fashion. Their playmaking on offense has really gone away. A run-game that started off the season looking super-strong has struggled massively in recent weeks, with Kareem Hunt's form dipping precipitously. They haven't been great on the other side of the ball, but it's the offense's failings that have made them look worse than they are. They've given up only 28 combined points in their last two games and the offense couldn't deliver enough to make it work. On one hand, they still lead their division and are over .500—a spot a lot of teams would like to be in. But based on how they look, they seem adrift at sea. And if able to will themselves out of this funk, why not last week at home against a Bills team that had looked horrible in recent weeks?

Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith hasn't been that great after a fast start to the season. After not throwing a pick in his first 8 games, he has 4 in his last three games. On Sunday at home against a Bills' defense that had given up 135 combined points in their last three games, they managed a paltry 236 yards of offense with ten points. Hunt had just 17 yards on 11 carries. Albert Wilson scored the team's only touchdown. Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill couldn't make an impactful play. With 19 total points in their last two games coming off the bye, the offense has really hit a wall for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs' defense has struggled at times during this latest swoon for the Chiefs, but it's hard to call them out for this latest run of failure. In the last few weeks, they haven't been that bad. In the second half on Sunday, they held Buffalo to a lone field goal to stage the comeback, which never materialized. It's not a great defense and they can shine in the right context. But with an offense that can't seem to get much right, they're not good enough to carry the weight of the whole team. Simply, they need more support from the other side of the ball, at which point playmakers like Justin Houston and Marcus Peters might be able to make more of an impact.

This is a tough road spot for the Chiefs. The Jets haven't been winning, but are better than their record would indicate. With how the Chiefs have looked, they would be right in the Jets' wheelhouse. And waiting for the Chiefs to start looking like the team that started the season 5-0 might be a futile undertaking. Sure, urgency could resonate at some point, but based on what these teams are doing now, I feel compelled to take the home dog in this one.
