Super Bowl LII MVP Betting

Super Bowl LII MVP Betting

By Loot, NFL Handicapper, Lootmeister.com

One of the more popular Super Bowl bets is on who will win the MVP. The candidates for the Super Bowl LII list is a deep one, with a large number of players who could step up and have a great game. Naturally, the quarterbacks will be the most-compelling candidates. At the same time, these are two teams with somewhat undefined stars. A group of different players contribute from week-to-week. There are guys more likely to win than other guys, but there are players pretty far down this list who could conceivably put themselves in line to receive MVP consideration.

Again, the quarterbacks have a leg-up over everyone on this list. Tom Brady himself has won this award four times. Still, in eleven of the last 22 Super Bowls, the MVP was a non-quarterback. Just in the past four years, a player other than a QB has won it twice. Von Miller won it in 2016, with Malcolm Smith winning it at enormous odds in 2014. That shows that the long-shot does sometimes pay off in this spot. And a look at the list shows that there can be some tremendous upside in betting on a non-quarterback. Brady is big chalk in this spot at -130, with Nick Foles at +350. The next choice drops all the way to +1500, and then +2000 and beyond. Here are the odds, courtesy of Bovada. Following that is our favorite picks.

Our Favorite Picks to Win Super Bowl LII MVP

The Favorites:

Tom Brady (-130): A 4-time winner of this award, he stands out as an ultra-compelling candidate. Value-wise, however, standing to win less than you bet on this proposition is hard to stomach. But no amount of surprise will register if Brady won this for the fifth time.

Nick Foles (+350): It wasn't long ago when the idea of Foles being a Super Bowl MVP was a far-fetched idea. But if you like the Eagles in this game, Foles at +350 isn't a bad choice and if he repeats his performance from the NFC title game, he should be right in the thick of it.

Middle-of-the-Road Picks:

Rob Gronkowski (+1500): Still recovering from a concussion sustained in the AFC title game, he should be okay by game-time. He's shown he has the game-changing ability to build a strong MVP case. Definitely the most-compelling choice for this award outside of the two quarterbacks.

Dion Lewis (+2000): He might lack some of name-power of others on this list, but Lewis gets a lot of touches on the ground and through the air. With Lewis, he will at least get the opportunity to shine in this game and if he does, the MVP award could be in the cards.

Brandin Cooks (+2200): If the New England offense thrives in this game, there's a reasonable chance that Cooks could put together the kind of stat-line and big plays needed to garner Super Bowl MVP honors.

Danny Amendola (+3000): A clutch performer capable of a big game, Amendola at 30-to-1 odds seems to have some value. He's a trusted target of Brady and a punt returner who will have chances to put up some big numbers and become MVP.

Alshon Jeffery (+3000): It seems that throughout the season, Jeffery became more of a cemented number-one receiver for the Eagles. Jeffery and Foles have shown they can connect on big plays and if the Eagles win this game, Jeffery might stand out as a top candidate and good value at 30-to-1 odds.

Chris Hogan (+6000): We're starting to get into the long-shots at 60-to-1. Hogan has seen his season slowed by injuries, but this might be the healthiest he's been in weeks. A reliable receiver and a clutch ball-catcher, Hogan is a nice darkhorse at these odds.

Our Favorite Long-Shots:

Duron Harmon (+10000): While it isn't easy for a safety to win the MVP, you can't sleep on the defense and Harmon seems as likely as anyone else on the Pats' "D" to have a big game. If he can get a couple picks, run one back, he could be in the running. But, he is 100-to-1 for a reason.

Fletcher Cox (+12500): A high-profile choice at 125-to-1 odds, Cox is a disruptive force who can make game-changing plays. If he has one of those types of games on Super Bowl Sunday, he could pay off at tremendous odds.

James Harrison (+22500): Now we're really pushing the limits of what the brain can withstand with this pick. Harrison is old as dirt and still working his way into the system of his new team. But we've seen superhuman performances from this guy before in the big game, so who knows? Might be worth a tickle at enormous 225-to-1 odds.

Phillip Dorsett (+32500): This is a real stab in the dark. We've been surprised by New England's personnel moves in the past and it's still hard to imagine a draft bust like Dorsett getting a lot of looks. But it seems he's been given some opportunities lately to make big plays and he had a real big one against Jacksonville. A long-shot and rightfully so, this one would even shock us.
