2017 Heisman Trophy Odds and Picks

2017 Heisman Trophy Winner Odds and Picks

By Loot, College Football Handicapper, Lootmeister.com

Making a bet on who will win the Heisman Trophy can be rewarding on different levels. Sure, your money will be tied up for a while, but those who can see past that know the rewards can far outweigh the drawbacks. For one, there is always a good-sized group of players being hyped, with bettors plunking their money down on a number of different candidates. That results in good payouts, with the rewards getting really handsome the more off-the-grid you go when making a selection. And as you can see, even some of the top choices are getting good odds.

We like bets that cram a lot of action into one wager. When betting on who will win the Heisman, you have a stake in that player's every appearance. An entire season's worth of action is compacted into one bet and it gives you a ton of rooting interest that carries throughout a whole college football campaign. We also like bets where you can capitalize off of any special insight you develop as a college football observer. When watching some of these players, maybe you had a feeling that a player could improve. Maybe a maturing offensive line or a great freshman receiver will help a quarterback. Perhaps a running back had little nagging injuries last season and is healthy and ready to explode. Whatever the case, it's a way for you to use your powers of individual player analysis and there aren't a lot of bets that enable you to do that.

There has been only one defensive player to ever win the Heisman. It's also seemingly taboo to crown a repeat winner, being that is hasn't occurred in over 40 years. One of the top favorites on this list is the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner—Louisville dual-threat quarterback Lamar Jackson. Then again, you can't rule him out with the numbers he generates. With the odds and the "all or nothing" nature of this bet, we recommend spreading it around and betting on at least several different players. You don't want to put all your eggs into one basket. Here are the odds to win the 2017 Heisman Trophy, followed by some of our best Heisman picks.

Jake Browning wins Heisman +1875
Deondre Francois wins Heisman +2000
Bo Scarbrough wins Heisman +1875
Jarrett Stidham wins Heisman +2350
Josh Rosen wins Heisman +3050
Trace McSorley wins Heisman +3050

Note About the 2017 Heisman Bet and the Odds: This bet offers you a little protection. Say you bet on a player and an injury, suspension, or some other unforeseen incident takes place before the first game of the season, your bet will be graded "no action." But if the Heisman candidate you selected plays the first game, the bet is a go. The odds here run on the money line. Each choice is an underdog represented with a plus-sign. And the number you see next to the plus-sign is how much you would win if you bet $100. You'll notice FSU quarterback Deondre Francois is +2000 to win the Heisman. A $100 winning bet on Francois would yield you $2000 in winnings. Also, you don't have to bet $100. That's just to make it easy to understand.

Our Top Two Favorites:

Sam Darnold, USC Quarterback, +470 Odds: It's hard to argue with Darnold's placement as Heisman frontrunner. After stepping into action in game four of last season, he threw 31 touchdowns and for over 3000 yards, while also showing a nifty set of legs. In some games, his numbers were off the charts and if he can do that with more consistency this season, the trophy could be his.

Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma Quarterback, +675 Odds: Another player where many weren't sure he would return, Mayfield is back and should again post great numbers. If his game and the rest of the offense click under new head coach and their former offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, as it should, Mayfield will be right in the thick of this race come September.

Our Top Two Middle-of-the-Road Picks:

Jalen Hurts, Alabama Quarterback, +1875 Odds: A true freshman as a starter last season, Hurts could be even better this season. He was remarkably unflappable for a teenager and more growth physically and mentally, along with another really good 'Bama offense, could have Hurts in this conversation by season's end.

Jake Browning, Washington Quarterback, +1875 Odds: Last season, Browning's big numbers made him a late-surging threat, as he earned an invite to the Heisman ceremony. The Huskies lost a key receiver in Ross, but Washington is still projected to do well and if they do, Browning will likely at least have Heisman-worthy numbers.

Out Top Two Long-Shot Picks:

Josh Rosen, UCLA Quarterback, +3050 Odds: Last season, he was getting a lot lower odds to win the Heisman, on the heels of a sensational freshman season. But inconsistent play and a season-ending injury in the Arizona St. game led to 2016 being a humbling experience for Rosen. We expect better this season.

Nick Chubb, Georgia Running Back, +3200 Odds: Some expected him to leave the school, but he is back for another go. Some might remember he first surfaced as a running-mate to now third-year LA Rams running back Todd Gurley. A healthy season could lead to some huge numbers.
