NFL Odds to Win the AFC Conference in 2017
By Loot, NFL Handicapper, Lootmeister.com
In a conference winner futures bet, you pick which team you think will win the conference and go to the Super Bowl. It's a bit less daunting than making a bet on a team to win the Super Bowl. That can be a rewarding wager to make if you win, but this is one way to insulate yourself, being that it is extra painful to bet a team to win the Super Bowl and have them come up short in the big game. This is a less-dramatic stand, but still a grandiose one on many levels. You can see that the payouts here are very outstanding, as a team needs to get into the postseason and win a few or several games against good teams to get to this spot.

Our Top Favorites to Win the AFC in 2017:
New England Patriots (+245): It's not easy to argue with the Patriots' status as division frontrunners again in 2017. The defending Super Bowl champs are heavy favorites to win their division and secure one of the top two seeds. That leaves them one playoff win from the conference title game. Some pieces were lost, while enough were added to make it unclear why anyone would see them as less than clear conference favorites. Sure, a 40-year old quarterback could get hurt, a Super Bowl hangover after playing for a cause in 2016 could ensue, or the top contenders from last season could be better. But the Pats look to figure in this conversation in a big way in 2017.
Pittsburgh Steelers (+550): If the stars line up right, the Steelers might just be the Patriots' most-compelling threat this season. This is another conference favorite where the QB-health factor always looms dangerously. If Big Ben can play most of the season and the offensive supporting cast around Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell finally discover their potential, the offense could be special. Their defense has been coming around and with better health, more consistency, and continued development; they could be a top-third type of defense. On one hand, the true winning formula hasn't really taken hold in Pittsburgh. Then again, with not a lot of things falling into place last season, they made it to the conference title game. They're a definite threat this season.
Our Top Middle-of-the-Road Picks to Win the AFC in 2017:
Kansas City Chiefs (+1100): With 33 wins in the last two seasons, it hasn't been easy to pinpoint the source or cause of the Chiefs' recent success. That might actually be a good sign for a team that extracts the most out of what they have. Their ability to simply win games and overachieve could really play a factor if things fall into place on the both sides of the ball personnel-wise.

Tennessee Titans (+1800): When picking a team to win the conference, it never hurts to pick one team that made a big move the previous season. Tennessee went from 5 combined wins in 2014-15 to a 9-7 mark in 2016. Head coach Mike Mularkey seems to have jolted the Titans out of their losing ways and with a few rookies delivering this season and the continued development of a blossoming "D" and Marcus Mariota, the Titans could be a factor.
Our Top Longshot Picks to Win the AFC in 2017:
Miami Dolphins (+2150): A 1-4 start to the 2016 season gave way to a big 10-6 record and a wild card spot in the playoffs. Their ability to get on a big roll of wins last season gives them some extra appeal at these odds, especially if they can catch some better injury-related breaks this season. They have a rising commodity in head coach Adam Gase, who is now in his second year at the helm. The defense is a unit on the upturn and could be better this season with a few personnel moves working out.
Los Angeles Chargers (+2800): In their first season back in the City of Angels, the Chargers could find the new locale airs out the rotten luck that has plagued one season after the next. Injuries have grounded their efforts on both sides of the ball for the past several seasons. If they hold up physically, their defense could be one of the better ones the Bolts have fielded in years. If Melvin Gordon and QB Philip Rivers maintain their level and get full seasons from guys like Keenan Allen, we could see an offense that isn't easy to stop. It's a longshot for good reason, but watching them the past few seasons makes one wonder how things would look if they could actually catch a break.
