On Sunday, the unbeaten Seattle Seahawks face the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts are 3-1 and have been playing really well, especially on defense where they are allowing 12.8 points per game. Seattle looks to keep the ball rolling after a nice come-from-behind win at Houston, where they overcame a big second-half deficit to notch a road win.
Look for Seattle to be in a little tougher this week against a Colts team that isn’t as likely to let them off the hook as Houston. The Colts, expected by many to come down to earth this season, have been surprising. The defense has given up 10 points in the last two games and Luck and Company look pretty good. If newly-acquired Trent Richardson can start coming around with this new offense, they’ll be even better.
Seattle has been as good as advertised, if not better. They were perhaps fortunate to win at Houston last week, which was more a case of the Texans imploding, but they put themselves in position to win when behind and that’s a sign of a good team. The hopes are about as high as they’ve ever been in Seattle at this point in a season. For good reason. QB Russell Wilson is showing no signs of a sophomore letdown, the skill guys are stepping up, and the defense is playing great. The “D” has given up 11.8 points per game and features a fearsome secondary that should put some fear into the Colts offense.
Seattle’s RB Marshawn Lynch is getting rolling and their receiving crew makes you wonder what it will look like when Percy Harvin joins the team. But even though they came back and defeated Houston on the road and have won both away games this season, they are not quite as potent as they are at home. They got away with it against a ragged Carolina team and then with what appears to be a regressed Houston team, but it may be tougher against an Indy squad that really seems to be coming together.
The Colts are a team that people are reluctant to acknowledge, even after making the playoffs last year in what was an incredible franchise turnaround. A lot of people thought the defensive liabilities would surface more this year and the team would deflate after an inspirational 2012 where their head coach was ill and they scored a handful of come-from-behind wins. Even when they beat the Raiders in the opening week, then lost to the Dolphins in week two, people were thinking this is it. Then they thumped the 49ers on the road, before massacring the hapless Jaguars last Sunday. If able to beat their second NFC West powerhouse opponent this week, it would put a lot of wind in the sails of this team.

After 18 picks last year, Luck has only thrown 2 this season through 4 games. And he’s a determined and alert runner, with a pair of touchdown runs and a series of other valuable scampers so far in 2013. So Wilson is not the only quarterback on the field who can do damage with his feet. It’s still early in his career, but it seems safe to say that this Luck kid is a winner.
Seattle is not just a frontrunner, as they showed on Sunday. Down 20-3 at the half and looking the part of a loser, Seattle clawed their way back into the game, got a couple breaks, and won it in overtime with a field goal. While maybe not as impressive as some of their other wins this season, it is perhaps the most rewarding and will have more of a galvanizing affect.
With Seattle, we are dealing with the most heavily-hyped team to ever come out of Seattle. That usually leads to a team becoming an iffy betting choice, with everyone thinking they’re so great. But in covering all 4 of their spreads so far this season, the Seahawks have managed to exceed their high expectations and remain a solid betting choice at the windows. And they showed on Sunday that even if they get down, they stay positive under the optimistic stewardship of coach Pete Carroll.
The Seahawks seem bent on winning as many regular season games as they can. A team like Seattle with homefield throughout the playoffs is going to be a hard team to keep out of the Super Bowl--barring any calamities. Seattle is in the middle of a rough stretch, with 4 road games in 5 weeks. But Indy being 4-1 is a lot better than 3-2, so expect the Colts to be putting a lot into this game. It’s a tough call, but Seattle is a hard team to bet against right now.
