Super Bowl 50 Betting Odds

Where: Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, California

A lot of people like to wait and see when it comes to betting on anything having to do with the Super Bowl. They either make bets on the game when it comes around or if they make future bets, they do so deep into the season after everything has been more or less defined. But for the enterprising bettor looking to capitalize off a unique piece of insight, early Super Bowl futures bets may be up your alley.

Getting in an early bet serves a few purposes. The main one is that you can lock in the odds you like. If, for example, you like a team to win the Super Bowl at 40-1, why wait for the team to start playing good, which will drive the price down? In any walk of life, those who truly succeed are those who know something and act on it before the rest of the world. Super Bowl futures bets allow you to do that.

Making an early Super Bowl bet gives you a lot of mileage on your wager. It’s like you’re making an investment in a team. As opposed to just betting individual games, a Super Bowl bet allows you to have a season-long stake in the team. Every game matters, as you pull for that team to succeed over the course of an entire season. These bets give you a lot of bang for your buck.

As you can well imagine, a lot of the usual suspects rest atop the list. Teams that did well last season get credit for likely being good again the next season. And to a large extent, that sentiment usually holds up. But this is a league with more coach and player turnover than used to be the case. A team’s fortunes can change on a dime. For example, a key injury always seems to come up during the season, throwing a team into a different dimension. Or conversely, a key player steps up and becomes a star, taking his team to a new level.

In other words, we see the top teams at the front of the list, but it’s not etched in concrete. What would happen if any of those teams were to lose their starting quarterback? Or what if this is the season where a team just so happens to sail past their expiration date? Every season, there are at least a few major surprises that were unforeseen as the season began.

After making two straight Bowls and winning one, Seattle looks to have retained enough key pieces to make another run and are the top favorite at +445. Then again, there’s a reason why the early-90’s Buffalo Bills were the last team to get to three Super Bowls in a row. And it took a great comeback in the NFC title game for them to get back there last season. The gap is narrowing and Seattle will need to have a lot of things go right to get to the big game again this season, despite being the league favorite.

The team that nearly beat Seattle in the title game last season, the Green Bay Packers, look poised for another serious run in 2015. If Aaron Rodgers can remain healthy for the duration of the season, look for the Packers to position themselves for a big postseason run this year.

Andrew Luck and the Colts have been building something meaningful over the past several seasons and some feel this is the season where it will all manifest. The top choice in the AFC, the Colts are a team that could make significant strides this season, but they still need a defense that doesn’t lag so far behind the offense. Some feel this is the season where we will begin to see that occur.

The defending Super Bowl champion should always get some respect, being that the Patriots with this same coach and quarterback are the last team to repeat as Super Bowl champs. One shouldn’t be so quick to start shoveling dirt on the Pats this season, though there are a multitude of personnel concerns.

Beneath the favorites are a bevy of interesting choices. Some are playoff teams looking to take that next step forward. Some of the choices are up-and-coming teams who may be poised to improve this season. However you want to approach it, there are many ways to benefit from a well-placed Super Bowl futures bet.
